Playing BlackJack: Doubling Down in Blackjack

If you are an aspiring Blackjack player you have probably heard of doubling down.  You may assume that this is a very difficult process and not something that you could do, but this isn’t the case.  Once you understand how doubling down works you can make it work for you quite easily.  There is a time and a place, but this is a technique that you can keep in your Blackjack arsenal so that you are as successful as possible each and every time you sit down at a Blackjack table.

Doubling Down: What is it?

The term doubling down is something that you will hear time and time again when you play Blackjack regularly or even just read about the game.  When you double down you are essentially doubling your bet, receiving one and only one additional card to the hand.  Sounds complicated when you put it like this but here is an example for you you’re holding a hand with a total of 11 against a dealers up card of five so you have a good chance of winning.

Because you have a good chance of winning by drawing one addition card you might as well increase your bet to make the most of the situation.  When you see it in action in invariably makes a bit more sense than if you try to read through it.  Many players need to see doubling down in action to really help them grasp the idea and how it can apply to their game.

Dealer
Player #1
Player has 11. Option to Double Down

If you want to double down in a face down game you need to toss the two cards face up on the table in front of your bet and then add a bet t the betting circle.  You will place this bet next to, not on top of the old bet.  The dealer will then deal one more card to the hand, and in the face down game it is typical to have the dealer tuck the card face down under the bet so it can be revealed later.

Before you go doubling down you should know that you are able to double down for any amount up to the original bet amount, so you could double down for less if you would like or you can go all the way up to the bet amount, whatever that may be.  This is ideal but before getting ahead of yourself and doubling down every time you get the chance you should think about if it really is the right move.  While doubling down is a good idea in some situations you are also required to give something up, and that is the ability to draw more than one card into your hand.  If you truly believe that doubling down is in your best interest you should double for the full amount of the original bet.

Again, this always sounds more difficult than it is.  If you are playing a shoe game you should feel free to ask the dealer as well as the other players about the process of doubling down if you have not seen it in action before.  Many people, like you, are new to the game and are eager to learn from others and this is the correct forum for that.

Player #1
Dealer has 18
Player #1 has 21 and WINS!

In blackjack, it does not matter what the suit of the card is. What matters is the card’s numeric value. All the picture cards – the king, the queen and the jack – all have a value of ten, while an ace can either be a one or an 11, depending on what the player wants it to be. An ace with the designated value of one is called a hard ace while the one with the value of 11 is referred to as a soft ace. To learn more on how to play live black jack click here
