Blackjack is yet another game whose origins are said to be traceable to 18th century France.  The game used to be known by the name vingt et une, which is French for “twenty-one.”  The name refers to the fact that in order to win, you must have in your possession a hand whose total value is 21 or close but never over.  To get a hand with a total value that exceeds 21 is to “bust”; when you bust, you lose the game.
