Playing Blackjack: The Value of the Cards |
One really important element of playing and winning Blackjack is understanding the value of the cards. If you do not understand the value of cards in Blackjack you will probably lose every single hand, or if you do win it will be on luck alone! If you are not familiar with the value of each card in a deck and how they work together you should sit down and memorize this information before you sit down at any Blackjack table, especially if you are playing for money!

Card Values |
Many people avoid playing card games because they are intimidated by the fact that each card has a different value. Luckily, the values assigned to the cards are very simple and once you know them the values will stick with you forever. None of the numbers are huge, which makes adding on the spot a cinch, which is important when you are trying to stay below but as close to 21 as possible, like you will be doing when you play Blackjack!

So, when you play the game you need to know that an Ace can be valued two different ways, as either a one or an eleven. That’s easy enough to remember, right? Then, the cards two through nine are valued as indicated on the face of the card, this is very straight forward.
.."an Ace can be valued two different ways, as either a one or an eleven." |
Once you have a handle on this information you can add information about the 10, Jack, Queen, and King to your knowledge base and this is also simple as all of these cards are valued at 10. So, if you were dealt a King, a Queen, and an Ace you would have 21 as the King is 10, the Queen is 10, and the Ace is either one or 11. You never have to articulate what you want the Ace to be, it is assumed by the dealer that the Ace is the denomination that will make the best hand. |
Still wondering how the suits will affect your game? In Blackjack the suits do not have any affect on the value of the card. So, it doesn’t matter if you have a five, a seven, and a nine of different suits, the fact is that the value is 21. Not having to worry about suits makes it really easy to learn the value of the cards and to begin playing Blackjack like a pro soon after you have all of the information that you need to play. Many people start playing in the casino with Blackjack and branch out from there, since it is one of the most straight forward games as soon as you learn the value of the cards.

THE VALUE OF THE ACE |
The Ace has two values that you chose. It can be either valued at a 1 or 11.
= 11 or 1
  = 11 OR 21
 |
FACE CARDS VALUES |
All of the face cards Kings, Queens, and Jacks have a value of 10 regardsless of it's suite.
  = ALL equal 10
 = 11 OR 21 (Natural BlackJack!)
Learning the value of the cards is something that takes most people just a few minutes, and if you need to stop briefly during play to consider how much you have in your hand no one is going to begrudge you that! The great thing is that you are not playing against the other players at the table; instead you are playing against the dealer’s hand, so no one is going to be pressuring you to hurry or make a move. This is also what makes Blackjack a really great game to play!
