The picture cards – that is, the King, the Queen and the Jack – all possess a value of ten. On the other hand, the Ace can have a value of 11 or just one, depending on the value assigned to it by the player.
Another thing about blackjack that the player must be aware of is that his only opponent in blackjack is the dealer, and not the other players sitting at that same table. The dealer, naturally, represents the house.
The game starts with the player putting his wager on the table. Once all the wagers have been collected from the participating players, the dealer distributes two cards to each player, one at a time. After this is accomplished, the dealer shall deal himself a hand of two cards and places one card face up (if the style of dealing is the Nevada style) or he will only draw one card from the deck and leave it facing up (if the style of dealing is the London style).
In the next stage of the game, the dealer will ask each player whether he shall stand or take a hit. To stand means to that the hand is as close to 21 as the player wants it, while to hit is to take another card in order to get the total value of the hand closer to 21. The dealer will not move to the next player until the player he is with finally decides to stand or busts. When the player has made the decision, the dealer then turns to the next player.
Those who did not bust on this round of the live blackjack get to be in a showdown with the dealer. In the Nevada style, the dealer will simply reveal the other card in his hand that is face down. If the dealer’s hand is not a natural blackjack (a 21), then he will continue taking hits until the value of his hand reaches 17 or he goes bust. If the dealer busts, then the players win.
