First on the list is the term black jack. In the earlier days, black jack literally refers to a black jack card. That is, a jack of clubs, or a jack of spades. The term came from the winning combination of any black jack card and an ace, which was awarded with a 10:1 payout in one variation of the original 21 game. So challenging but enticing the 10:1 payout was that the term black jack suddenly became synonymous to victory. Now, although black jack is not taken by its literal meaning anymore, the term is still tantamount to victory, in that the player who gets a black jack automatically wins, thereby ending the game. Also, when the dealer gets a black jack, the house wins. In modern times, however, a winning black jack hand does not necessarily have to contain a black jack card. The trick is simply to get a hand that is equal in value to 21. There are two types of black jack. A two-card and a three-card black jack. A two-card black jack is a black jack hand made up of two cards, as opposed to a black jack hand made up of three cards, which is a possible result when you hit.

Aside from the winning term “black jack”, the terms “stand” and “hit” is also the top two terms that you should know about when you play live black jack. These two terms are your possible moves. Since you will be dealt two cards, and the combined value of the two cards will be your fighting chance in the game, your decision whether to hit or to stand matters a lot. It actually spells your fate, as it determines whether your final card value will be closer to 21 than the dealer’s hand, or will be beyond 21 already. To hit is to have the dealer deal one more card for you, the value of which will be added to the value of your current cards. To stand means to stay with your current hand.

There are two more possible occurences in a black jack game, a push and a bust. A push is the black jack term for a tie, while a bust happens when a player’s or a dealer’s hand value exceeds 21. Aside from moves and occurences, there are also some terms that identify the different bets black jack players can make. A split is when a player who has two similar cards in one hand splits the two cards to make two hands. A double bet is when the player doubles his bet and gets one chance for a last card. However, doubling can be a very dangerous bet to make. You should be very confident about your existing cards and the card that will be dealt for you so as to double the amount of your bet. Aside from a split and a double, a black jack player can also make an insurance bet, which protects the player from losing out when the dealer happens to have a black jack hand. This is usually placed when the dealer’s first card already indicates a possible black jack hand. However, the payout for this bet is smaller, and it is not widely recommended. Lastly, black jack players can also surrender, which means to give up your bets and leave the game.

Those are the basic terms you should know when you play live black jack.
